After a challenging start to the season last week, Morpeth were looking to bounce back against local rivals Gateshead who had won their opening game 10-0.
Morpeth started with two debutants who were signed up by captain Gal. Crooks and Stokeld both received MOTM nominations at the end of the game, showing how much the team valued their performances.
The game was even throughout however it was Gateshead who took the lead in the 1st half. Morpeth appealed for a decision from the umpire, whilst Gateshead continued, fired the ball into the D, which unluckily was turned into the Morpeth net by O’Halloran. A very unfortunate own goal which would continue his 100% DOD record when playing this season.
It didn’t take Morpeth long to equalise. Renwick unselfishly guided his shot/pass into the post before it was turned in by Crooks.
Morpeth continued to press Gateshead into the 2nd half and had a number of chances through the good work of Laude, Lauder and Oakton on the wings. However, a defensive error led to the ball being given away and Gateshead took their chance late into the game. It finished 1-2 to the visitors. Disappointing for Morpeth but captain Gal praised the efforts and hard work of the team.
Notable mentions to Stewart in goal for some fantastic clearances and saves and Renwick up front for… running which was voted as the games champagne moment.
MOTM: Stokeld
DOD: O’Halloran
Champagne: Renwick
