Gateshead were the visitors to Longhirst with Morpeth 3s looking to make it five wins from five this season. Page was leading the team today as the captain was standing on the sidelines instead. Page reminded the team of their recent form and inspired them to play hard and leave everything on the pitch.
Morpeth started well with some fantastic link up play from E. Renwick which created a chance for Green. A sign of things to come as Morpeth put the visitors under a lot of pressure for the entirety of the first half. Morpeth pushed hard and they finally broke the deadlock with a strong strike from M.Renwick. Half time 1-0.
Morpeth were bossing the game with all of the team joining in with the free flowing attacks. A notable mention to O and H Craik for their tireless work in the Morpeth midfield.
During the 2nd half, a laps in concentration in the Morpeth defence allowed an opening for Gateshead and it was suddenly 1-1.
As Gateshead grew in confidence, Morpeth needed to regain a foothold in the game. The tide was beginning to turn. Whitehead won a free hit at the edge of the Gateshead D just as Oakton had ran over to the side to swap with O’Halloran. Whitehead picked out O’Halloran in the Gateshead D and he fired the ball into the bottom corner. 2-1 Morpeth.
This set the tone for the rest of the half. Morpeth pushed on and M.Renwick kept composed to add two more goals to his tally. A hatrick and a fantastic ‘number 9’ performance. Morpeth were now 4-1 up and cruising once more.
FT: Morpeth 4 - 1 Gateshead
